PODspace is an exhibition and education program managed on a voluntary basis by a group of emerging curators and artists.

PODspace stopped operating as a traditional gallery at the end of 2012, before experimenting with pop up exhibitions in 2013. During 2014 PODspace will again retain the pop up exhibition format, working with partners to activate spaces around Newcastle.

Greyscale

Claire Martin

drawings from Paris

Wed May 19 - Sat June 5 2010
Opening Thursday 20 May 2010, 6-8pm

Newcastle artist Claire Martin describes the daily routine of purposeful transit and brief encounters in 45 small figurative drawings.

In their march of time the figures form a poetic picture of unknown urban spaces. Individually, each is a short story.... collectively, the drawings steer us toward issues of mortality and time.

The drawings were produced over a 2 month period in Paris and are direct observations of the street below Martin's studio window.

Martin recently won the $12,000 2010 Calleen Art Award at Cowra Regional Art Gallery and earlier this year was a finalist in the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing 2010, when judge Cathy Leahy, Senior Curaor at the National Gallery of Victoria described her work as being "of note".

Grayscale is an opportunity for local gallery goers to see a suite of 20 works that saw Martin being selected as a finalist in the 2008 Dobell Drawing Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW.
